Welcome back to the western world; Singapore is nothing asian apart from all the asian people who life here. It's one of the smallest countries in the world but still bigger than I expected. It takes about an hour from the Malaysian border to get into the real city, if there's no traffic jams. Out of the city there's still a lot of nature and the city itself has some nice parks and a big botanical garden. There's a famous Zoo where most animals have much more space than in most other Zoo's. Especially the primates have big areas than look like their natural habitats. And they had a Tapir here, so I could photograph at least one of the animals I saw in Taman Negara.
The most bizarre experience though was the downtown area of Singapore itself. I have seen several scyscraper cities before, but never with such original architecture as here. offices, hotels, shopping malls, all look very modern and different from commun. The most bizarre building I have even seen in my life is the Marina Bay Sands hotel. A hotel built on top of three other skyscrapers. Wow!!! And next to it a big botanical garden area with artificial trees. This is how the world will look like in 100 years probably. On top of the Marina Bay hotel there's a rooftop bar. I came to Singapore with one of the dutch girls I met in Cameron Highlands and both of us were about to leave southeast Asia, so we celebrated this with a very expensive drink in this rooftop bar, but with amazing views of the whole city and funny to experience the rich business peoples daily live for a moment.
Just a few days before the starting of the Chinese newyear I had to leave Asia. Fortunately the chinese people living here started the celebration a little bit before the exact date, so I did get an impression of how it will be, though I have to go back to this part of the world one day to really experience it.
So far the stories about southeast Asia. Indonesia is yet to come in a few months but the next stories will be about the country of the antipodes.
